The cute title and cover art caught my eye and I was sold when I read the blurb! Stella Bixby has created a very unique heroine in Ellie Vanderwick whose hair magically changes color and texture along with her emotions. Unfortunately, this power has been more of a curse than a blessing to Ellie and she feels she must keep it a secret at all costs. When she learns that a grandmother she never knew has died and left a farm in Iowa to her, Ellie heads straight there, hoping to learn more about her family and why her hair misbehaves the way it does!I don't think I've ever read a book set in Iowa before and I really enjoyed that aspect of Downward Death! Cliff Haven is a small community full of an interesting variety of characters--some who immediately take Ellie under their wing and others who'd like to see the backside of her. Ellie, along with her very animated pet pig, Penelope (love her!), are starting to feel at home when the unthinkable happens--a dead body is found in the Vanderwick cornfield! Although Ellie didn't even know the victim, she's immediately suspected and ostracized by some residents. What's a girl to do but seek out the truth herself so that she can clear her name?There were some great twists and turns in this story and I applaud the author for making this mystery very unpredictable! As the body count added up, I wasn't sure who Ellie could trust or who the bad guy (or girl) was. The suspenseful, last few chapters of this book had me biting my fingernails and sitting on the edge of my seat! I'm excited to read more of this series and see what happens to Ellie (and Penelope!) next. And I can't wait to find out more about Ellie's family--Is her mother still alive and why did she abandon her baby? Who's her father? And what the heck is going on with her hair? I have to find out the answers to these questions and more, so I've already pre-ordered Book 2! Enjoyable little jaunt to the midwest and small town culture!The story gets going fast and as clues add up you're kept guessing who did it. The main character is a very resilient woman who has had a difficult life due in part to peoples fear of her magical hair.Most of the 3 things that annoyed me were things that would have messed up the storyline if done differently, so I get why they were that way. Love her piggy and wish I could explore her amazing home and stay over. I also love that her piggy and her van had magical personalities.I do wish her hairs magic reveal had been a bigger deal because she had felt so unaccepted her whole life and then it was like no big deal in the moment and not emotionally addressed later either... But that just goes to show I was emotionally invested in the character!I read it fast and liked it enough to buy book 2 right away. Buy it!
